An Introduction To Networking
The Nuts and Bolts of Servers, Clients, and Platforms
If you are new to the world of computer networking, you may think a server is someone who brings you food in a restaurant, a client is a customer, and a platform is something a politician runs on. While all that is true, those terms and others are used when people are talking about networks. Many SME proprietors who have limited computer experience are hesitant about setting up a network. A knowledge of the basics goes a long way toward addressing the concerns of business owners as they consider how best to deploy a network.
One of the first components of a network is the server. A server is a computer that performs various services for the entire network . Generally, it is either a workstation or a mainframe . This is because it will be handling much heavier loads than ordinary desktop systems. The demand placed on servers dictates that they utilize robust operating systems. Servers also control how computers in the network share resources. Servers sometimes have very specific jobs, such as an email server or an application server. This depends on the specific needs of a firm. Servers are configured so that they support whatever part of the network is expected to be the busiest. A business that handles large amounts of email would have a dedicated email server, for example.
The next element of a network is the client. The client is a computer that can access services over the network. The computer that provides the services is the server.
The client computer (with its own memory and hard drive) communicates with a server when it needs data. The client can operate independently. It can also communicate with different servers as needs be. The concept of client / server technology came into existence as the price of computers began to drop. Mainframe computers were expensive, and did not allow users much freedom. The client/server concept changed networks forever. It is the most common and affordable choice for small businesses.
No network runs without a platform. A platform consists of a processor type (in terms of hardware) and an operating system (in terms of software). The operating system controls how the hardware and software elements in a network work together. Interoperability is an important consideration when one is considering network options. Usually, computers on different platforms cannot run each other's programs. IBM Lotus Domino servers, however, will run on different operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Sun Solaris, and Linux. This makes it easier for firms that are already using a particular platform to introduce a new integrated system to the network.
The best networks share some important performance characteristics. Network compression is one. Network compression means that data is condensed before it is transmitted over the network. This makes for maximum network performance. For companies using slower line speeds, this is especially helpful. Bandwidth is another aspect that contributes to a network's capacity. Bandwidth refers to the range of transmission frequencies a network can utilize. The more information you want to send at one time, the more bandwidth you need.
Setting up a network for your firm doesn't have to be a complicated, difficult experience. With a basic knowledge of the components of a network, and capable professionals to assist, your company network will be up and running in a snap. Then you can enjoy the faster access to data, more cost effective use of CPUs, and the increased reliability that a network offers.
